Sewage spills in Post Falls

| May 21, 2010 9:00 PM

POST FALLS - A sewer line was broken in Post Falls on Thursday morning, requiring about 7,500 gallons of raw sewage to be pumped from the site, public works director Terry Werner said.

Werner said the 15-inch pipe at the intersection of Greensferry Road and Ponderosa Boulevard was broken into during work upgrading the city's Greensferry lift station. The sewage was contained to a ditch.

The line that was hit was coming from the Ponderosa lift station, Werner said.

"City crews were able to install a bypass at 12:45 p.m., limiting the amount of the spill," a press release from the city states.

Werner said he doesn't believe the spill will be a threat to the aquifer and it is not a threat to residents.

"They do not need to take any special precautions," Werner said.

The Department of Environmental Quality was notified about the spill. A hydrological study will be required on the incident to determine the impact, if any, to nearby wells and the aquifer. The study's results will be released in about six weeks.

"It's really sandy material, so it didn't flow very far," Werner said.
