POST FALLS - Want to be part of a world record?

Then bring your inflatable life jacket to Cabela's in Post Falls on Thursday.

The National Safe Boating Council, the Canadian Safe Boating Council, and partner organizations are taking part in the "World Record Inflatable Life Jacket Inflation Day."

People from around North America will attempt to set the world record for the most inflatable life jackets inflated as part of a single day event.

Dorothy Takashina, chairwoman of the Personal Flotation Device Manufacturers Association, will have about 20 inflatable life jackets for people to wear.

"Bring one if you have it," she said.

If there aren't enough to go around, you can still participate as an observer.

"By participating you're not only getting the opportunity to educate about the new styles of inflatable life jackets, you're also going to be a part of history," according to a press release.

There will also be a lesson on how to refold, repack and rearm an inflatable life jacket.

Takashina said with boating season about to begin, it's important to raise awareness about wearing life jackets on the water.

Most boaters are against mandatory use of life jackets.

"We do know that 90 percent of people who drown are not wearing a life jacket," she said. "The idea is wear it."

Inflatable life jackets are a little more expensive than traditional life jackets, and start around $70.

Anyone planning to participate should arrive by 9:45 a.m.

PFDMA is having its annual conference at The Coeur d'Alene Resort next week.
