Burglars steal boa constrictor in Cd'A

COEUR d'ALENE - First, they stole with the snake. Then, they came back for more - and got away again.

A woman told Coeur d'Alene police that someone entered her home on the 1800 block of St. Maries Avenue between 10 and 11 a.m. on May 14 and took her son's boa constrictor.

The woman said she later fell asleep at home between 5-7 p.m. and when she woke up, the snake's tank was also missing.

She told police the front door was unlocked.

The snake was valued at $150, while the tank was worth an estimated $15.

ICF to award $111K in North Idaho

BOISE - The Idaho Community Foundation's Northern Regional Grants Panel has selected 77 North Idaho nonprofit organizations to receive more than $111,000 through its competitive grant cycle.

This year there were 168 applications requesting more than $680,000. Grants are awarded in the areas of arts & culture, education, emergency services, health, libraries, conservation/environment, public projects, recreation, and social services.

"The job of the Northern Regional Grants Panel is a difficult one because each of these organizations has a compelling reason for needing a grant," said Bob Hoover, president and CEO of ICF.

Grant recipients included Idaho Youth Ranch/Anchor House, $1,723; Lakes Middle School, $4,139; Northstar Child Development Center, $4,450; and TESH, Inc., $3,000.

Sunday race to

represent moms

Compared to nine months of hauling a developing human, a 9-kilometer jaunt might not seem so hard.

Maggie's Place, the Coeur d'Alene shelter for homeless mothers-to-be, will hold a 9-K (5.6 mile) running race this Sunday, the distance representing the months of pregnancy.

The event, which also includes a 3-mile walk/stroller push and free kids dash, will raise funds for the operating expenses of Maggie's Place.

"We have struggled in Coeur d'Alene as pretty much most organizations have," said Anne Metzger, director general of the house. "I feel like there's always a need."

The course will start at Riverstone Park, then follow the Centennial Trail to City Park and return the same way.

The 9K run and 3-mile walk will begin around 9 a.m., Metzger said. The kids' dash is scheduled at roughly 10:20 a.m.

Participants will receive athletic T shirts made from recycled water bottles.

Registration is $30. Folks can register starting at 8 a.m. on May 23, or online at: http://race4maggiesplace.com.

"It promises to be a great day," Metzger said.
