Coeur d’Alene senior wins medalist honors by one stroke; Vikings finish second to Eagle

HAYDEN LAKE - Once his 147th shot of the 5A state tournament rolled into the cup, Coeur d'Alene High senior Alex Pounds could finally relax.

After the way his round started on Tuesday, relaxing probably wasn't on his mind.

Pounds went from a 3-under par 69 on Monday to 5-over on the first four holes on Tuesday. However, Pounds found his game in the next 14 holes to earn medalist honors with a two-day total of 3-over 147, edging Eagle's Jon Van Dyk by one stroke at Avondale Golf Club.

"I had a case of the shanks this morning," Pounds said. "I was missing some shots that I normally hit well. I hit a house and then it bounced back inbounds."

Pounds began to pick things up as the rain began to fall, finishing with a round of 78. After starting out bogey-bogey-bogey-double bogey, he had nine pars, three bogeys and two birdies the rest of the way.

"I started hitting the ball more solid in the last 14 holes," Pounds said. "I didn't make any mistakes after that. I didn't have too many putts from that point and started to play well."

Going into the final hole, Pounds had teammate Zach Davis tell him that he and Van Dyk were even - though Pounds led by one, after Van Dyk birdied the par-3 17th hole. In the trees on the right side of the fairway, Pounds delivered an approach shot from 110 yards out to the 18th green that stopped some 15 feet from the hole. He two-putted for par and when Van Dyk missed his birdie putt from 12 feet, Pounds was the winner.

"If I had to do it again, I'd probably would have hit it again," Pounds said. "It worked out today. I left everything I had out there. I didn't play great, but played good enough to win."

"I'm real proud of Alex," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "It's awesome for him. He got a case of the shanks, but held it together. He shot well and has been tough in each tournament."

Coeur d'Alene finished second with a two-day total of 622, nine strokes behind champion Eagle with 613.

"We had our sights set on the title," Duncan said. "It's disappointing, but they worked hard this year. We just need to step it up again next year. We've got a lot of good kids coming up and I'm real excited for the future. We've always had a good program, but we need to step it up."

Eagle led Coeur d'Alene by nine strokes after Monday's first round. Both teams shot 316 on Tuesday, which was marked by an early afternoon rainstorm.

"The weather can be the equilizer," Eagle coach Jeff Dunn said. "But you can't use that as an excuse and you need to come out and take care of business. The course was awesome. It was a great test to all the participants because of how it played."

Andrew Roller finished sixth as an individual for Coeur d'Alene with a 153.

Coeur d'Alene junior Brennan Stillinger wasn't pleased with how the Vikings finished.

"I'm disappointed," Stillinger said. "As a team, we stuck it out there. There are a lot of teams that would like to be where we are right now. We just didn't achieve our goals."

Coeur d'Alene finished the tournament with 34 penalty strokes as a team.

"We'll have to learn from our mistakes," Stilinger said. "We'll be back next year to go out and get it done."

Lake City junior Kevin Porto shot a 79 to finish with a 166 for the tournament.

"Throughout the tournament, I didn't think I played as well as I could have," Porto said. "I was having a swing problem on Monday and corrected it today. I'm just going to aim to get better next year."

Lewiston claimed the girls championship with a 703, besting Rocky Mountain of Meridian by 48 strokes.

Post Falls tied for sixth with a two-day total of 795, led by Rachel Westby's 183.
