HAYDEN LAKE - As the Coeur d'Alene Viking boys golf team walked off Avondale Golf Course on Monday, their body language said it all.

Trying for the school's first state title since 2004, the Vikings are third, nine strokes back, in the eight-team field in the 5A state tournament.

"We made some bad decisions earlier today with some shots," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "With the way Eagle is shooting, they'll be tough to beat."

Eagle leads with a 297, led by Ty Travis with an even-par 72. Centennial is in second place, one stroke back. Coeur d'Alene shot 306.

"We're down, but definitely not out of it," Duncan said. "Nine strokes isn't impossible to come back from, but we'll need to come back better Tuesday. Andrew (Roller) battled well today, as did Mikey (Porter), who shot a 79, which is great for a freshman. Hopefully we come back better tomorrow."

Coeur d'Alene senior Alex Pounds shot a three-under 69 to take the medalist lead. Jacob Read and David Elliot of Centennial are two strokes back at 71.

"I knew Alex would come out and shoot well today," Duncan said. "He had a real solid round today after shooting a 78 last week in regionals. He hit 16 greens in regulation and could have scored lower, but had a few extra putts that pushed his score up."

Andrew Roller of Coeur d'Alene is in a four-way tie for seventh with a 75.

Lake City's Kevin Porto, playing as an individual, shot an 87 on Monday.

Post Falls is seventh out of eight teams in the girls tournament. Lewiston leads the team scoring with a 356.

"We did some good things today," Post Falls coach Jeff Hinz said. "We just didn't score well today. Makenna (Schevenius) played well and shot her best round at Avondale today. As a team, it just wasn't our day. We'll come out tomorrow and play hard and see what happens."

Tyler Barker of Vallivue leads the medalist race with a 76.

The tournament concludes today, with the top three teams scheduled to tee off around 9 a.m.
