4A REGION 1

Sandpoint boys, girls capture titles

MOSCOW - Sophomore Kevin Kirby won his second consecutive boys singles title, Sophia Meulenberg won the girls singles and Piper Wahlin and Mikka Nostdahl dominated the mixed doubles draw to propel Sandpoint to the 4A Region 1 championship at Moscow High.

Nostdahl and Wahlin only dropped two games in the two-day tournament.

"The whole idea was to give those two a chance to win state and it's playing out like I though it would," Sandpoint coach Kent Anderson said. "I'd say they're the favorites, but anything can happen at state. They both have great court sense, both hit hard with touch and have all the tools."

Both Kirby and Meulenberg's biggest strength is consistency, Anderson said.

"Sophia went through the whole tournament in straight sets," Anderson said. "She gave up just 11 games in three matches, just consistent as always."

Other Bulldogs goingto state are Meranda Carter and Mica Wolcott in girls doubles, Kane Wijngaarden and Dannette Mauck in mixed doubles and Ben Hardy in boys singles. Hardy avenged an earlier tournament loss to Moscow's Hunter Levy, winning 6-2, 6-0 the second time around with a state berth on the line.

"I'll bet Ben didn't sleep all night - he was waiting for this one," said Anderson, who will take nine players to state and hopes to vie for a state trophy. "We pretty much dominated districts, but that doesn't do you any good at state."

State is Friday and Saturday at Julia Davis Park in Boise.
