Students invited to Summer Math Blast

| May 15, 2010 9:00 PM

Students in grades 4-12 are invited to sharpen their math skills over the summer - and possibly win prizes doing so - through the Apangea Summer Math Blast.

An Apangea Parent Night will be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Midtown Center, 1505 N. Fifth St., to explain this free, online math tutoring program sponsored by the Idaho State Department of Education and Apangea Learning.

The program is designed to help students maintain their math and problem-solving skills throughout the summer and prepare them for the topics they will see when the new school year begins. Research shows that students can lose up to 2.6 months of math skills over the summer break, and that the average teacher spends four to six weeks re-teaching forgotten material.

Tuesday's session will demonstrate how Apangea works and show parents how to enroll their children in the program. Students who sign will have an opportunity to win a variety of rewards for their work. Apangea is setting aside 15 iPod Nanos and 35 $15 gift cards specifically for Idaho students who work consistently on Apangea this summer.
