Vikings off to good start

LEWISTON - Shae Carson won the shot put and discus to help Coeur d'Alene's girls take the lead after the first day of the 5A Region 1 track and field meet Thursday at Vollmer Bowl.

Carson threw the shot put 41 feet, 5 inches and the discus 136-5. Kinsey Gomez won the 3,200 (11:33.3), Faith Hazard took the high jump (5-0) and Coeur d'Alene won the 4x800-meter relay for a 12-point lead over Post Falls after 8 of 18 events.

Coeur d'Alene's boys got wins from David Norris in the 3,200 (9:42.8), Carson Green in the triple jump (43-5 1/2) and the 4x800 relay. Post Falls got wins from Jordan Pastras in the high jump (6-4), Matt Wardell in the shot put (56-7) and Austin Funk in the discus (151-7). Zach Linscott of Lake City won the long jump (20-8).

Coeur d'Alene's boys lead Lake City by 19 points.

In the 4A girls meet, Latecia Howell of Lakeland won the long jump (16-8) and the triple jump (33-6). Lakeland trails Sandpoint by three points after seven events in the girls meet, and is third in the boys meet.

The meets conclude today.
