Roller helps Vikings capture regional title

HAYDEN LAKE — All that Coeur d’Alene needed was to get on a roll.

Coeur d’Alene senior Andrew Roller shot an even-par 72 to earn medalist honors in the 5A Region 1 boys golf tournament on Tuesday at Avondale Golf Course, also helping lead the Vikings to the team title with a 299 score.

“We’ve got a streak going now,” said Roller, whose Vikings have won nine in a row (tournaments or matches) with him in the lineup. “We had a huge win at the IEL (Inland Empire League) Invitational. We just need this streak to keep alive one more week.”

The top five individual boys qualified for state. Brennan Stillinger of Coeur d’Alene, Kevin Porto of Lake City and Brandon Koehler of Lewiston also qualified as individuals.

“I haven’t had one all year,” Roller said of winning medalist honors. “Especially to have one on our home course was big. It was really awesome.”

Lewiston qualified as the second team from regionals with a 318.

“A 299 is a good score on this course,” Coeur d’Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. “It has some out of bounds and will be a tough track for state. Michael (Porter) stepped it up today as the No. 5. For Andrew to shoot like that, we should be in the hunt next week.”

Lake City coach Kent Scanlon was happy with Porto’s 74.

“I’m extremely proud of Kevin today,” Scanlon said. “He worked hard on his game this year and peaked at the right time. I’m extremely satisfied with him for putting a good round together.”

The state 5A tourney is Monday and Tuesday at Avondale.
