Lakeland advances to title game

| May 12, 2010 9:00 PM

RATHDRUM — Dani Westling’s two-run double in the fifth inning helped Lakeland beat Moscow 5-0 in the semifinals of the 4A Region 1 tournament Tuesday.

“I thought we played very well,” Lakeland coach Colleen Bevacqua said. “We played solid defense today and didn’t make an error. We were solid backing up the pitcher and it helped to get some runs going.”

Lakeland (12-11) advances to the championship game Saturday. The Hawks will face the winner of Thursday’s game pitting Sandpoint (5-16) at Moscow (5-19) in the title game at noon at Lakeland High. If the Hawks lose, a second title game will follow.

ST. MARIES — Sophomore Marlee Masterson’s double with one out in the seventh lifted the Lumberjacks past the Spartans in the Intermountain League finale for both.

“We had a hard time keeping the top of their lineup off base today,” St. Maries coach Todd Bitterman said. “Their No. 2 hitter had four walks today and both (Dani) Hawes and (Holly) Hirst had four hits each. They were kind of a headache for us.”

Both teams combined for 26 hits and 24 walks.

“Priest River does a nice job of getting the bat on the ball,” Bitterman said. “We had to have some timely patience in the seventh and take strikes and had our sophomore come through.”

St. Maries (14-6, 8-4 IML) will face the winner of the Kellogg-Orofino game Friday at 2 p.m. in the District 1 tournament at Timberlake High.

Priest River (4-14, 3-9) faces Bonners Ferry on Friday at noon. The winner plays Timberlake at 4.
