BASEBALL

MOSCOW - Cody Vandever hit a first-inning grand slam to help propel the visiting Hawks past the Bears 14-11, 9-7 in a 4A Inland Empire League doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

"These were some big wins for us," Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury said. "We basically had to go down and split the games to get home field on Monday. The guys came out hitting the ball and they started coming in groups."

Daniel Mobeck and Kurt South had three hits apiece for Lakeland (9-10, 5-3 4A IEL) in the first game.

In the second game, the Hawks rallied from a 4-1 deficit to score seven runs in the sixth inning to complete the sweep.

"It was a good statement game for us," Bradbury said. "All our hits were timely and sporadic. Our kids competed all day and were having fun the entire day. Hopefully it continues into Monday."
