St. Maries rallies, earns No. 3 seed to districts

BASEBALL

ST. MARIES - Jaden Guidry hit a two-run double in the bottom of the seventh inning to tie the game, and eventually scored on a wild pitch to give the St. Maries Lumberjacks a 5-4 victory over the Priest River Spartans in Intermountain League play Friday.

The win gave St. Maries (9-14, 8-4 IML) the No. 3 seed into next week's 3A District 1-2 tournament. The Lumberjacks will face No. 6 Kellogg, while No. 4 seed Priest River (12-10, 8-4) hosts No. 5 Bonners Ferry in loser-out games. Both are Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Orofino enters the tournament as the No. 2 seed behind league champion Timberlake. Next Friday at Orofino, Timberlake plays the Priest River-Bonners Ferry winner, and Orofino faces the St. Maries-Kellogg winner in semifinal games.

Saturday's district champion and runner-up advances to state May 20-22 in Ontario, Ore.

"It was a big deal for our kids," St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. "They are resilient and kept their composure the entire game. Runs are always tough to come by with (Kyle) Bradbury pitching. It was a big win for us."

KELLOGG - Sydnie Malloy had five strikeouts for the Tigers in an Intermountain League win over the Wildcats at Kellogg Middle School.

Timberlake opened a 5-0 lead after the second inning, picking up four hits and scoring on an error.

Tarah Ivie and Alesha Barr had an RBI each for Kellogg (6-8, 5-5 IML), which hosts Bonners Ferry today in a doubleheader at 11 a.m.

Timberlake (13-9, 11-1), IML champs for the sixth straight season, returns to action next Friday at the 3A District 1-2 tournament at Timberlake.

Seedings to the six-team tournament won't be determined until Tuesday. The top two teams at districts will advance to state May 20-22 at Ramsey Park in Coeur d'Alene.

KELLOGG - The Badgers locked up the No. 5 seed to the 3A District 1-2 tournament with an Intermountain League doubleheader sweep of the Wildcats at Teeters Field.

"There was a lot of offense today (Thursday)," Kellogg coach Kevin Roach said. "I was disappointed in the second game. We should have won that one."

Matt Holak had five hits on the day, with a double in the first game and going six innings on the mound in the second game for Bonners Ferry (5-13, 4-8 IML).

Hayden Garner had four hits on the day, three of which went for doubles for Kellogg (3-14, 1-11).

Bonners Ferry will travel to No. 4 seed Priest River, while Kellogg travels to No. 3 seed St. Maries on Tuesday in loser-out games.
