Trojans in position for top seed

SOFTBALL

POST FALLS — They started the week in third place in the 5A Inland Empire League.

But with a sweep today at Lake City, the Post Falls Trojans could end up as the No. 1 seed to the Region 1 tournament.

Post Falls put itself in that position with a 3-1 victory over Coeur d’Alene on Thursday.

Rachel Collins and Dara Kolar had RBI singles in the first inning for Post Falls (12-7, 5-5 5A IEL), and Bri Joseph added a run-scoring single in the fourth. Richelle Ashburn struck out 12 and walked two in a four-hitter.

“Defensively it was one of the better games we’ve played,” Post Falls coach Jack Foster said. “We made some good solid plays, and got some big hits with runners on when we needed it.”

Post Falls plays at Lake City today in a 2 p.m. doubleheader. It’s the Save 2nd Base game, a benefit for breast cancer awareness.

RATHDRUM — Casey Stangel hit a grand slam with one out in the third inning to propel the visiting Timberwolves past the Hawks.

Jamie Yurick started the inning off with a double for Lake City (17-4). After a walk and an error, the lefty-swinging Stangel hit a fly which skimmed off the top of the right field fence and over.

Amber Grubham hit an RBI double in the second inning for Lakeland (11-11), which plays the winner of Monday’s Sandpoint-Moscow game on Tuesday in the semifinals of the 4A Region 1 tournament.

Lake City plays host to Post Falls today in a 2 p.m. doubleheader.

ST. MARIES — Megan Hill tripled in the tying run and scored the go-ahead run on an error, sparking a three-run seventh that lifted the visiting Tigers past the Lumberjacks in Intermountain League play.

Jordyn Muhlhauser drove in an insurance run with a single for IML champion Timberlake (12-9, 10-1 IML).

Magan Cummings’ RBI single in the bottom of the sixth put St. Maries (11-6, 5-4) ahead 8-7. Morgan Cummings went 3 for 5 with three RBIs for the ’Jacks, who play a doubleheader at Priest River on Saturday, then host Priest River on Tuesday to wrap up the regular season.

Timberlake plays at Kellogg today at 4 to conclude its regular season.

POST FALLS — Ben Pharis totaled four hits on the day in the Timberwolves 5A Inland Empire League sweep of the Trojans.

Mitch Bevacqua and Bryce Mort had two-run hits in a 10-run fifth inning for Lake City (14-8, 6-6 5A IEL), which will open the 5A Region I tournament Monday at Coeur d’Alene at 4 p.m.

Grant Curtis and Mike Truscello had six strikeouts each in the first game for Lake City.

Jordan Johnston hit a two-run double in the fifth inning of the first game for Post Falls (3-15, 0-12), which travel to Lewiston on Monday at 4 p.m. in the first round of the Region 1 tourney.

ST. MARIES — John Morris and Kyle Overland each hit two-run home runs and Timberlake defeated St. Maries in Intermountain League play.

Derek Tymesen threw seven strikeouts and Salvadore Miranda added three hits for Timberlake (13-6, 9-3), which finished its regular season and heads to next Friday’s 3A District 1-2 tournament at Orofino as the No. 1 seed. Orofino is the No. 2 seed.

St. Maries (8-13, 7-4) hosts Priest River today at 4 p.m. to decide the third and fourth seeds to districts. Both will play Tuesday in loser-out first round games at districts.

“We would like to have as much momentum as possible heading into the district tournament, so hopefully we put together seven good innings tomorrow,” St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said.

COEUR d’ALENE — Jayce Yoshida of Post Falls fired a 3-under-par 69 to claim boys medalist honors at the Lake City Invitational at the Coeur d’Alene Public Golf Course.

Coeur d’Alene’s boys, led by Brennan Stillinger’s 73, shot a 307 to win by eight strokes over Lewiston.

Katie Greear of Moscow was girls medalist with a 75, leading the Bears to a four-shot victory over Lewiston.
