Highway 3 to honor veterans

| March 31, 2010 9:00 PM

North Idaho veterans organizations are teaming up to designate State Highway 3 as Medal of Honor Memorial Highway. We have a number of prestigious Medal of Honor recipients in North Idaho, notably Vernon Baker, and this is a fitting project to honor them all.

Noelan (Mac) McCormak of the Marine Corps League welcomes input (call 664-0674), and is working with Senator John Goedde on the designation.

Linda Shepperd Schmidt marked a milestone birthday yesterday but was surprised by her cousins with a party on Saturday. For several years the close-knit cousins have been passing a tiara to those among them who reach the milestone, each adding a personal "charm" to the crown. What a fun tradition. You can see a photo of the milestone birthday tiara at More Main Street.

Kathrynle Eachon is feeling a bit melancholy about her upcoming 82nd birthday on Sunday, noting it will be the first in almost ever that she's not sharing it with her lifelong friend, Lois Seiter Eggart, who passed away on March 22. Kathrynle and Lois grew up together and worked together at Lois' family business, Seiter's Cannery in Post Falls. Kathrynle has fond memories of her sweet friend and their summers picking, berries, green beans and apples in the early 1940s. When World War II started, Kathrynle went to work for the Naval Supply Depot. How blessed Kathrynle and Lois were to have known such a lasting friendship.

Today birthdays are being celebrated by Priscilla Baker, Chris Jones and Shirley Christie, who's marking her 70th! No April Fools, Payton Peugh and Kim Haddock have birthdays on the first day of April. Friday Judi Messina, Dallon Pope, Beth Barclay and Lee Periman will blow out the candles, and on Saturday Cindy Jordan is reaching a milestone. On Easter Sunday Kathrynle Eachon shares her birthdate with Duffy Taylor, Keith Hanlon, Marshal Meeks and Laura Keck. Monday give a birthday shout out to Sharon Stevenson, Kelly Hawkins, Gail Osterson, Sharon Wagner and John Negaard.

Fooey on the flu. Haven't been felled this badly by the bug in I don't know how long and hope it's on the way out.
