Rock Island public hearing postponed

COEUR d'ALENE - Kootenai County residents will have to wait to attend a public hearing on a major subdivision proposed south of Coeur d'Alene.

This Thursday's examiner hearing on Rock Island, a 101-residential lot development on 82.7 acres proposed west of Hull Loop, has been postponed.

A new date has yet to be set.

The applicant, CAV OK LLC of Coeur d'Alene, requested more time to dig test holes and negotiate a road development agreement with Worley Highway District.

The hearing had already been postponed for those reasons from the Jan. 7 date.

Nearly 400 Kootenai County and Spokane residents have submitted comments to the county Planning and Zoning Department about the Rock Island subdivision, with opinions split between support and opposition.

Idaho snowmobiler dies in avalanche

MISSOULA, Mont. (AP) - The West Central Montana Avalanche Center says a 29-year-old snowmobiler from St. Maries, was highmarking when he triggered the avalanche that killed him.

The family identified the victim as Timothy J. "TJ" Grieser.

The avalanche happened Saturday near Missoula Lake in the Lolo National Forest on the Montana-Idaho border about 10 miles of Superior.

Officials with the avalanche center say Grieser was highmarking a steep chute and was making the last run of the day when the slab released. He was caught and carried an estimated 800 feet and ended up buried under 4 feet of snow.

His partners witnessed the avalanche, quickly located him with transceivers and dug him up. Grieser died of his injuries shortly after he was dug up.
