Arranging an ideal marriage

| March 31, 2010 9:00 PM

No matter how busy you are, there's always time to do some good.

Even in these trying economic times, when those who have jobs are working harder than ever to keep them, exhilarating outlets are important. If you're among those who have lost jobs in the past year or so, maybe you've got more free time and good intentions than cold hard cash. And if you retired just before the economy went south? Congratulations! Now, are you ready to contribute to the betterment of your community?

For all of you, few things bring on good feelings like volunteering for a cause you believe in.

And it just so happens the Kootenai County Young Professionals have a prospective opportunity waiting for you at the Volunteer Fair.

On April 28 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. at the Coeur d'Alene library, dozens of local nonprofits will offer a smorgasbord of opportunities, thanks to the efforts of the Young Professionals. For the third consecutive year, KCYP is putting together this match-making affair in the hopes that good-hearted citizens will find an outlet for their charitable efforts.

The timing could hardly be better for these nonprofits because, alas, conditions could hardly be worse. Not only is charitable giving down locally and nationally, but public funding that is so critical to many nonprofits is being curtailed as well.

Besse Bailey, one of the early board recruits when KCYP formed three years ago, is one of the driving forces behind the Volunteer Fair. Her organization is also being helped by United Way of Kootenai County.

"Now more than ever, nonprofits are reliant on volunteers to help provide essential services to those in the community who need them," Bailey said. "It's a way for us to give back and to make our corner of the world a better place."

At last count there were more than 300 nonprofits in Kootenai County. Because space at the library is limited, nonprofits are urged to contact Bailey soon to reserve booth space. Call 661-6050 or e-mail bbailey@mountainwestbank.com.

In the meantime, prospective volunteers, start your engines. We're confident that on April 28 you'll find a cause you can be passionate about.
