Schools transparency measure passes

| March 30, 2010 9:00 PM

BOISE (AP) - A bill requiring school districts with more than 300 students to post their financials online is headed to the Governor's desk - thanks to a nudge from Lt. Gov. Brad Little.

Little stepped in late Monday to cast the deciding vote.

The House approved the measure last week 54-12.

School district financial information is already open to the public. But Coeur d'Alene Republican Sen. John Goedde said Idahoans should be able to track on the Internet how taxpayer money is being spent.

Twin Falls Republican Sen. Chuck Coiner opposed the idea, citing concerns citizens would question even the smallest expenses without understanding the bigger picture.

The measure failed 16-18 on its first vote. But moments later, Rexburg Republican Sen. Brent Hill reintroduced it and changed his vote to yes.
