Shawn Reid, who led Post Falls High to its first state championship in boys basketball since 1964, has been named 5A boys Player of the Year by the Idaho Statesman newspaper of Boise.

The Statesman announced its all-Idaho boys and girls basketball teams on Sunday, following a poll of coaches statewide.

Reid, who has signed with Montana State, averaged 16 points, 11 rebounds and 2.9 assists during the season, and 17.3 points and 8 rebounds at state.

"Incredibly smooth athlete with wonderful basketball skills," Eagle coach Tom Seifert wrote in his vote for Reid. Eagle lost to Post Falls in the state title game.

Sophomore point guard Marcus Colbert of Post Falls, who averaged 17.3 points per game at state, also was named to the 5A first team.

"Quickest, most well-rounded guard I have seen in 20 years," Seifert said.

Junior post Carli Rosenthal of Coeur d'Alene and senior guard Katelyn Loper of Post Falls were named to the 5A girls first team.

Rosenthal averaged 9.9 points, 7.5 rebounds, 3 assists and 1.4 blocks per game prior to state, and totaled 48 points and 26 rebounds in leading the Vikings to their third straight state 5A title.

Loper, who has signed with Hofstra, averaged 22 points, 5.6 rebounds and 4 assists per game.

Priest River won the boys and girls state 3A titles, and also produced both players of the year - Jake Weimer, a 6-4 senior forward, and Melissa Hopkins, a 5-9 junior guard.

Weimer averaged 17.1 points and 10.5 rebounds prior to state, then averaged 24 points and 12 rebounds at state.

"Dominated the state tournament," Fruitland coach Mike Fitch said. "Set himself apart offensively and on the boards. Had the energy to will his team to victory."

Hopkins averaged 17.5 points, 12 rebounds and 4 assists prior to state, then averaged 17 points and 13 boards at state.

"If she is on, good luck," Bonners Ferry coach Travis Hinthorn said. "Athletically, she plays over you."

Junior guards Eric Holbrook and Max Salesky were named to the 3A boys second team.

Hopkins was joined on the 3A girls first team by senior teammate Taylor Stewart, and senior Chelsea Morgan of Kellogg.

Stewart averaged 15.5 points and 6 rebounds prior to state, and averaged 19.3 points per game at state.

"Best three-day performance at the state tournament," Shelley coach Burke Davis said.

Morgan averaged 11 points and 7 rebounds for Kellogg, which lost to Priest River in the state title game.

"Ran the floor as well as any post," Davis said. "Always seemed to be in the right place at the right time."
