Ex-NIC player named CardinalĀ men's assistant soccer coach

COEUR d'ALENE - Former North Idaho College men's soccer standout Garga Caserta has been hired as assistant coach and strength and conditioning coach for men's soccer at NIC.

Caserta recently completed a bachelor's degree in physical education with a minor in coaching from the College of Idaho in Caldwell. As a senior, Caserta helped lead the College of Idaho Coyotes to an undefeated 13-0 Cascade Conference record in 2008. He was awarded the Newcomer of the Year Award during his junior season, tallying nine goals and nine assists throughout his career at the College of Idaho.

Caserta, from Aracatuba, Brazil, played at NIC in 2004 and '05 and still holds the NIC single season (25 points, 18 goals, seven assists) and career points (44, 32 goals, 12 assists) records. He earned Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges all-star recognition his freshman season as well as NJCAA Region 18 Player of the Year, NIC student-athlete of the Year and NJCAA All-American honors his sophomore season.

Caserta replaces Ken Thompson on the NIC men's soccer coaching staff.

Hauser Ice BreakerĀ fun run set for April 4

HAUSER - Registration for the 10-kilometer Hauser Ice Breaker run on April 4, a seeded race for Bloomsday, is available at www.hauserwatershed.org.

The race starts at 10 a.m. at the Hauser Lake pavilion behind the Hauser Fire Station.

Packets can be picked up at Fleet Feet Sports, 511 Sherman Ave., in Coeur d'Alene on Friday, April 2, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. or at 9 a.m. the day of the race.

Registration before Tuesday is $15 with a T-shirt and $7.50 without a shirt. The costs rises $5 after Tuesday.
