SANDPOINT - A four-run third inning and a solid complete game by Cody Vandever helped Lakeland secure a win over Sandpoint in a 4A Inland Empire League opener at War Memorial Field.

Sandpoint (1-3) scored twice in the second inning, but the Hawks (3-3) responded quickly with four runs in the top of the next frame, all they would need in support of Vandever, who scattered nine hits and struck out eight.

"I liked his presence, he didn't get rattled even when they were hitting the ball," said Lakeland coach Jason Bradbury.

Coeur d'Alene third

at Pullman invite

PULLMAN - Andrew Roller and Alex Pounds each shot 76, tying for third in the medalist competition, as the Vikings finished third at the Palouse Invitational at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club.

Coeur d'Alene shot 317. Clarkston and Southridge (Kennewick, Wash.) tied for first at 315.

"It was horrible conditions - windy, rainy, 35- to 40-mile an hour winds, and cold, so those three guys that shot in the 70s were studs," Coeur d'Alene coach Bryan Duncan said. "I could hardly stand driving around in the cart watching them."

Coeur d'Alene returns to action April 6 at the Moscow Invitational.
