Film workshop coming to Cd'A

COEUR d'ALENE - The Northwest Independent Film and Video Entertainment Society will hold a film workshop on the basics of digital compositing for independent film (tools and techniques) on April 10.

Guest instructor Chris Ervin will conduct the workshop. It will include:

• Basic visual effects workflow between FCP2 and AfterEffects CS4

• Exporting media from FCP to AE.

• Analyzing footage and understanding formats

• Inserting finished shots back into the edit timeline, and color correction.

• Chroma keying, simple motion tracking and compositing techniques in AE.

• Pulling great keys with badly lit greenscreens.

• Motion tracking techniques in 2D space.

• Simple digital compositing and shot finishing.

Ervin received an MBA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's renowned college of Art and Art History in 1995. His first creative position was awarded by the prominent 525 Post Productions in Hollywood. In 1997, he left 525 to build his own creative studio, VelocityApe FX. By the spring of 2000, he had worked as a graphic artist and creative consultant with artists such as Limp Bizkit, Metallica, No Doubt, and The Eagles.

From 2001 to present, Ervin has taken his company and created three separate divisions: film, broadcast, and Web development/branding. More recent visual effects work include: Meet the Browns, Punisher War Zone, The Irishman, and Ozzy Osbourne. Currently much of his energy and focus has been on visual effects supervision, previsualization, creative direction, and film compositing for various independent production companies. To date, he has worked on more than 50 features, and hundreds of television and promotional campaigns. In 2003 he was nominated for a Best Visual Effects award at the DVD Premiere Movie Awards in Los Angeles.

The workshop will be held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Icon, 317 E. Sherman Ave.

The cost for KNIFVES members is $35, $40 for non-members and $20 for students.
