North Idaho's Dalton takes medalist honors

KENNEWICK, Wash. - North Idaho's Branden Dalton followed a three-over 75 with an even par round on Monday to take medalist honors at the two-day Columbia Basin Invitational at Horn Rapids Golf Club.

The North Idaho men's team finished in fourth place out of nine teams, improving their Day 1 score by seven strokes.

"It was 68 degrees on Saturday (for a practice round), and then Sunday came with 40 degrees, 20-mph winds and rain," NIC assistant coach Derrick Thompson said. "They were pretty brutal conditions on Sunday, and it's a narrow, desert course - no room to bail out on either side.

"The scores came down a bit on Monday - it was still a little cool, but we had no wind or rain. Branden played solid, didn't make many bogeys, but he has a little bit more potential we haven't seen yet."

Jeremy Jensen and Dillon Williams shot 77s on Monday for the Cardinals.

On the women's side, NIC took second behind Community Colleges of Spokane, shooting a 535 to CCS's 498.

"We shot ourselves out of it on the first day," Thompson said. "Sunday the wind and rain kind of got to the girls a bit more than the guys, so we had a good talk after the first day and tried to light a fire under them."

The NIC women all improved their scores on the second day, with Ashley Burke's 83 and Emily Thorud's 84 the low Cardinal rounds on Day 2.

The NIC men host the Cardinal-Bigfoot Shootout April 2-3 at Avondale and The Links. The Cardinal women tee off next vs. Lewis-Clark State on April 9.
