Free ski at Schweitzer on Friday

Schweitzer Mountain is extending its appreciation for local support by offering a day of free skiing on Friday.

"It's been a great year and that's really due to the people who continue to come up and show their love for the mountain and the sport," said Tom Chasse, Schweitzer's president and chief executive officer. "In recognition of the ongoing local support, here's a day just for you."

Arrive at Schweitzer before 11 a.m. to receive a free lift ticket, no strings attached.

For those who want more than just one day, Schweitzer has also unveiled its Spring Fling Pass, a $99 (plus tax) pass that gets patrons unlimited skiing through the weather permitted closing date of April 11. The pass also serves as a discount toward 2010-2011 season passes.

Farmers agents sponsor fraud essay contest

Idahoans will soon learn how acts of fraud impact their pocketbooks. Idaho Farmers Insurance agents are sponsoring a Fraud Awareness Coalition's Essay Contest for high school seniors.

"We are asking all Idaho high school seniors to do some research and write an essay on the topic, how fraud impacts Idahoans," said Kris Pacey, Farmers Idaho State Executive Director. "Farmers Insurance hopes to open everyone's eyes and make them aware of traps they might fall into or problems they could cause by participating in fraudulent activities."

The Fraud Awareness Coalition is working to educate Idahoans about the cost and impact of fraud, Idaho Department of Insurance Director Bill Deal says.

"This scholarship contest is an opportunity for high school students to become aware of how various types of fraud affect them and their families."

The department is urging students throughout the state to participate.

"Insurance fraud is a felony in Idaho," Pacey said. "That is a clear message that we are working to get out to all Idahoans. We are working to encourage people to come forward and report fraud."

Three scholarships will be awarded:

• First place, $1,000.00;

• Second place, $750.00;

• Third place $250.00.

• Winners will be notified in writing by the Coalition on or before June 1.

To be considered for the scholarship, high school seniors must submit an original essay following these guidelines:

• Essays must be at least 500 words in length on the topic, "How Fraud Impacts Idahoans."

• Essays must be typewritten and include a bibliography and cover page identifying the author and contact information.

• Essays must be postmarked no later than Thursday, April 15 and mailed to:
