Ashburn sets tone for Trojans in sweep

HERMISTON, Ore. - Richelle Ashburn had 13 strikeouts in the first game for the Post Falls Trojans as they swept the Hermiston Bulldogs 2-0, 12-7 in a nonleague doubleheader Friday.

Heidi Mueller had three hits and four RBIs in the nightcap for Post Falls (3-1), which faces Richland and Southridge today in Kennewick, Wash.

LEWISTON - Post Falls left the bases loaded twice in the second game of a 7-0 and 6-2 loss to Lewiston in a 5A Inland Empire League doubleheader at Church Field.

"All six of their runs in the second game were unearned," Post Falls coach Mick Zeller said. "We could have easily won that game. Our pitchers threw well today, but we left the bases loaded twice. We were one hit away from winning the game. We're there, but not getting a big hit when we need it."

Matt Lickfold and Bryson Smith had two hits apiece for Post Falls (1-3, 0-3 5A IEL) in the second game.

Tony Davidson and Scott Benner had hits in the opener for Post Falls, which will face Clarkston in the first game of the Lewiston tournament next Friday.

KENNEWICK, Wash. - Coeur d'Alene senior Brian Klatt hit a grand slam in the top of the third inning in the opening game, but it was not enough as the Vikings fell 16-6 and 3-1 in a nonleague doubleheader at Southridge High in Kennewick.

Matt Lambert added a solo home run in the top of the first in the opening game for Coeur d'Alene.

In the nightcap, Jake Pereira threw a complete game in a 3-1 loss.

"Southridge has a quality program," Coeur d'Alene coach Nick Rook said. "I thought Jake (Pereira) threw well in the second game. We made a lot of plays behind him."

Coeur d'Alene (2-2) faces Skyview High today in Hanford.

COEUR d'ALENE - The top-ranked Bruins swept the 20th-ranked Cardinals in a Scenic West Athletic Conference doubleheader at Memorial Field.

Salt Lake's (33-0, 21-0) Meranda Wood had a three-run double in the top of the sixth inning to cap a four- RBI performance in the first game.

Jessica Ross had both RBIs for North Idaho (21-13, 14-8).

In the nightcap, Bruins pitcher Jordyn McDonald struck out 11 in a one-hitter.

Both teams will resume their series today at noon at Memorial Field.

n GIRLS: Coeur d'Alene senior Dayna Drager earned MVP honors with 18 points to lead the East past the West 65-55. Amanda Buttrey of Coeur d'Alene added 10 points for the East.

During the half of the girls game, Clark Fork senior Shaina Gustafson won the 3-point contest.

n BOYS: Sandpoint senior Stefan Buratto scored 21 points in an MVP performance to lead the East boys past the West 122-116.

Justin Mikkelson of Post Falls scored 13 points for the West.

J.J. Stoddard of Lake City won the boys 3-point contest, with Coeur d'Alene's Connor Williams winning the Slam Dunk contest.
