Metcalf leads Hawks past Tigers
SOFTBALL
RATHDRUM - Ashley Metcalf struck out seven for the Lakeland Hawks in a complete-game 4-1 win over the Timberlake Tigers in nonleague action Thursday.
Freshman Jenna Hoffman had three hits for the Tigers (0-1), including a solo home run in the top of the third inning.
Amber Grubham had two RBIs for the Hawks (1-1).
Both teams travel to the Lewiston tournament Saturday.

COEUR d'ALENE - The Vikings exploded out of the gate in their season opener, sweeping the Bulldogs in a pair of nonleague games at Larry Schwenke Field.
"We came out with all our guns smoking," Coeur d'Alene coach Larry Bieber said. "We really rattled the bats in the first game. We actually hit the ball a lot better than I thought we would. I didn't know what I had at the start of the day, but I was really happy with the performance of the team."
Sophomore Elli Tindell combined for six hits and senior Kristina Goodwin added a solo home run in the first game for Coeur d'Alene (2-0). Lindsie Scholwinski had seven strikeouts in the opener.
Nikki Ragsdale had six strikeouts in the second game for the Vikings, who travel to Wenatchee on Saturday to face Eastmont High and Wenatchee.
