Hoyas stunned in first round of NCAA tourney

MIDWEST REGIONAL

Armon Bassett scored 32 points to help No. 14 seed Ohio beat Georgetown 97-83 in the first round of the NCAA tournament Thursday night at Providence, R.I.

The Mid-American Conference tournament champion Bobcats (22-14) took the lead early on their 3-point shooting and were never threatened by the Hoyas (23-11).

Kansas 90, Lehigh 74: At Oklahoma City, Marcus Morris scored 26 points, leading Kansas (33-2) past Lehigh (22-11).

Tennessee 62, San Diego State 59: At Providence, R.I., Melvin Goins made his fourth 3-pointer with 19 seconds left after San Diego State cut the deficit to one point, and Tennessee (26-8) held off the Aztecs (25-9).

Northern Iowa 69, UNLV 66: At Oklahoma City, Ali Farokhmanesh hit a 3-pointer from the left wing with 4.9 seconds left to lift Northern Iowa (29-4) past UNLV (25-9).

EAST REGIONAL

Kentucky 100, ETSU 71: At New Orleans, Eric Bledsoe scored 29 points and the Wildcats (33-2) dominated ETSU (20-15).

Washington 80, Marquette 78: At San Jose, Calif., Quincy Pondexter drove for a tiebreaking bank shot with 1.7 seconds left, and Washington (25-9) beat Marquette (23-11).

New Mexico 62, Montana 57: At San Jose, Calif., Roman Martinez had 19 points, six rebounds and four assists and New Mexico (30-4) defeated Montana (22-10).

Wake Forest 81, Texas 80: At New Orleans, Ishmael Smith's pull-up jumper from about 17 feet out with 1.3 seconds remaining in overtime lifted Wake Forest (20-10) past Texas (24-10).

WEST REGIONAL

BYU 99, Florida 92, 2OT: At Oklahoma City, Jimmer Fredette scored 37 points, including two 3-pointers in double overtime, to seal the seventh-seeded Cougars' (30-5) win over Florida (21-13).

Butler 77, UTEP 59: At San Jose, Calif., Shelvin Mack scored 18 of his 25 points after halftime, leading fifth-seeded Butler (29-4) past UTEP (26-7).

Kansas State 82, North Texas 62: At Oklahoma City, Denis Clemente had 17 points and six assists, leading the Wildcats (27-7) past North Texas (24-9).

Murray State 66, Vanderbilt 65: At San Jose, Calif., Danero Thomas hit a 15-footer as the buzzer sounded and 13th-seeded Murray State (31-4) stunned fourth-seeded Vanderbilt (24-9).?

SOUTH REGIONAL

Villanova 73, Robert Morris 70: At Providence, R.I., Scottie Reynolds made seven of eight free throws in the final 3:06 to send the game into overtime and finished with 20 points to lift Villanova (25-7) past Robert Morris (23-13).

Saint Mary's 80, Richmond 71: At Providence, R.I., Omar Samhan had 29 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Gaels (27-5) past the Spiders (26-9).

Old Dominion 51, Notre Dame 50: At New Orleans, Frank Hassell scored 15 points to lead Old Dominion (27-8) past Notre Dame (23-12).

Baylor 68, Sam Houston State 59: At New Orleans, Ekpe Udoh had 20 points and 13 rebounds, leading Baylor (26-7) past the BearKats (25-8).
