HAYDEN - A 28-year-old Coeur d'Alene man was shot to death Tuesday afternoon at a Hayden apartment complex.
Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies continued their search for the gunman late Tuesday night.
Kootenai County Sheriff's officials identified the victim as Ryan William Taylor late Tuesday night.
The suspect has been identified as Chad Lee Moore, 35.
Authorities launched a multi-agency manhunt Tuesday evening around a forested area near Hayden Creek and Triangle 7 roads in Hayden after locating a possible match to the reported gunman's getaway truck, said Lt. Stu Miller of the sheriff's department.
A pair of witnesses outside the Lakeview Village Apartments off Government Way in Hayden said they heard up to four gunshots in rapid succession around 2:50 p.m.
"It was real quick, like 'pop, pop, pop, pop," and then nothing else," said Ward Fry, who was outside with his father at their shop building next to the apartment complex at the time.
"It was like, 'what the heck, is that a gunshot?' And then all the sudden we saw a gal on the phone running toward the house.
"She was just frantic," he said. "We figured it was gunshots."
Sgt. Andy Boyle, of the Kootenai County Sheriff's Department, said detectives are investigating what led to the shooting.
Authorities couldn't say how many people witnessed the shooting, or where Moore lives.
But Tony Cangiamilla, who lives in the apartment building at 10102 N. Government Way just north of Dakota Avenue, said he had seen Moore and the blue truck around the complex several times and thought that the suspect might live there.
"We were polite as far as neighbors go but I haven't lived here long enough to know him," he said.
Cangiamilla said he returned from work just before 3 p.m. with his fiancee and children when they noticed a body on the ground outside one of the units.
"My fiancee, said, 'someone has fainted,'" Cangiamilla said. "And I got out of the car and you could see a little blood on the floor."
Moments later Kootenai County sheriff's deputies and Idaho State Police troopers arrived, he said.
Other witnesses said they saw emergency responders administering CPR on the victim just outside a doorway.
"Everyone was freaking out," Cangiamilla said of the witnesses. "And the little girl was crying."
Shortly after the shots were fired, Moore was seen fleeing the complex northbound on Government Way in a 1994 blue Toyota pickup truck with a white stripe and license plate number K433586.
Deputies described him as 5-foot-6, 195 pounds and wearing Carharts and a camouflage jacket. He is considered armed and dangerous.
Around three hours later, authorities tracked a possible match on the truck to the remote Hayden area, where the search, aided by helicopter, continued in the dark.
Around 6 p.m. authorities confirmed that the shooting victim, who had been transferred to Kootenai Medical Center, had died.
SWAT team members are assisting in the search. The sheriff's department asked the Post Falls and Coeur d'Alene police departments to take over all non-emergency calls as they investigate the shooting and search for Moore.
