Sen. Mike Jorgenson plans to seek re-election to the Idaho Senate for Legislative District 3.

"I am proud and honored to serve the people of our area of northern Idaho and pride myself on the level of constituent service I provide," the Republican said.

The district comprises Hayden, Hayden Lake, Athol, Bayview, Rathdrum and other communities.

"I believe that during my time in the state Senate I have consistently fought to make sure the issues and concerns of my constituents are addressed, particular in public safety with respect to law enforcement and respect for the legal workers in Idaho, as opposed to the interests of illegal workers."

Jorgenson said if he is re-elected he will continue to work hard to preserve the rights and freedoms citizens have come to expect.

"Our individual rights as citizens can be threatened by special interests who seek to employ illegal aliens or by a federal government seeking too much control in our lives while at the same time ignoring the protection of our borders," he said.

Jorgenson is chairman of the Indian Affairs Council, serves as vice-chair of Senate Judiciary & Rules and also serves on Local Government & Taxation where he said he has helped keep taxes low.

He said his service on Judiciary & Rules has been particularly beneficial due to his interests in both the Idaho State Police and correction, both of which he is a staunch supporter.

He is particularly proud to have sponsored two bills: The Michael Kralicek Act, S.1111, which provides a lump sum payment to heroes, such as police and firemen, who are permanently disabled in the line of duty; and the Shasta Act, S.1119, which significantly increased the amount of money the victims of sexual violence can obtain to assist them pay for trauma counseling.

"While I believe I have been able to assist the passage of legislation that has helped improve the lives of the people in my district, I believe there is more work to do," he said. "I believe state government needs to do more now to help businesses create more jobs here in Idaho and I believe if re-elected I can help make this reality by passing additional legislation to combat illegal immigration."

Jorgenson is also proud to have served as vice-chair of Senate State Affairs, vice-chair of education and a member of the Transportation Committee.

Jorgenson was born and raised in Boise and is a graduate of Capitol High School as well as Eastern Oregon University, where he played football. He is the father of two, grandfather of three and is happily married to Cynthia. He worked as a business and legal consultant before retiring in 2008.
