| March 5, 2010 11:00 PM

North Idaho College head volleyball coach Chris Kosty announced his resignation to take the position of assistant volleyball coach at Indiana University in Bloomington, Ind.

Kosty coached at NIC for three seasons, one as an assistant to former head coach Bret Taylor and the last two seasons as head coach. This past season, he led NIC to its first No. 1 ranking in the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) poll in the school's history, while guiding the Cardinals to a co-conference championship in the Scenic West Athletic Conference.

In his first season as head coach in 2008, Kosty led the Cardinals to a Region 18 tournament championship and an NJCAA national tournament appearance, where the team finished 11th in the country.

"Kosty has proven to be an excellent recruiter, which probably attracted interest from Indiana University," NIC athletics director Al Williams said. "He helped NIC maintain its status as one of the elite volleyball programs in the country at thetwo-year college level during his tenure and elevated the program to new heights in the rankings. He will be a good addition to the Indiana coaching staff."

Kosty began his collegiate playing career at Goldenwest Junior College in Huntington Beach, Calif., where he won two California state championships and the prestigious state Most Valuable Player Award. Following his sophomore season, Kosty transferred to the University of Hawaii where he started as an outside hitter. After college, Kosty played professional volleyball in Europe and then returned to the country to train with the United States National Team as a libero. He also played on the Association of Volleyball Professionals tour, made famous by Karch Kiraly, from 2000 to 2005.

Kosty returned to college at California State University, Long Beach to complete a bachelor's degree in history in 2002. While at Long Beach State, Kosty served as the volunteer coach of the women's volleyball team that finished 28-4. He has also coached club volleyball and served as an assistant coach at Oregon State University and California State University, Long Beach.

An immediate search will begin for Kosty's replacement, according to Williams.
