Bureaucratic battles and a birthday brewing

There's one conservation district that needs to clean up its act.

The Shoshone County commissioners sent a letter this week to the Kootenai-Shoshone Soil and Water Conservation District scolding board members for squabbling and failing to do their jobs as a result.

Due to the conservation board's infighting and conflicts with other agencies, the Shoshone commissioners wrote they will withhold funding from the district until the board is restructured.

"It is our opinion that the inability of individuals within the board to get along with one another has created a situation where cooperation with funding and partnering agencies is unattainable," the letter reads.

The Kootenai County commissioners need to look into the matter further before they decide whether to withhold funds, too, said Commissioner Rick Currie.

"If some agencies are pulling their funds, we're not going to be real willing to support with our dollars, because our dollars definitely will not go as far at this point," Currie said. "We need to do our research."
