Lumbermen roll in tourney opener

OMAHA, Neb. — Mitch Bevacqua went 4 for 5 with seven RBIs on Wednesday as the Coeur d’Alene Lumbermen defeated Sioux Falls 16-5 in their opening game of the Decker Sports College World Series tournament.

“It was really nice to start the tournament on a positive note,” Coeur d’Alene coach Lloyd Duman said. “It was a really good start for us.”

Austin Kiefer went 3 for 4 for Coeur d’Alene (10-9), which faces the Woodward Travelers of Woodward, Oka. today.

SPOKANE — Andrew Ely hit two home runs as the Spokane Dodgers defeated the Prairie Cardinals in their opening game of the Best of the Northwest American Legion “AA” tournament at Central Valley High.

“We had three earned runs, they had four,” Prairie coach Dustin Frank said. “They are a great team. They hit the ball really well, but we competed with them. We gave them six of their 10 runs and they’ll make you pay for each mistake.”

Coeur d’Alene natives Matt Lambert had three hits and three runs and Devon Austin two hits for the Dodgers (18-4).

Bryson Smith had a two-run double in the fifth for Prairie (6-10), which faces Hanford today at 10 a.m. at Central Valley High.
