FLAGS: Patriots versus pretenders

| June 13, 2010 10:00 PM

In his letter to the editor on Sunday, June 6. Mr. Don Frazer believes he is being a patriot by flying the U.S. flag 24/7/365.

Well, what he is is negligent toward our national emblem. There are rules of etiquette to be followed when flying the flag which no one seems to remember or care about anymore.

He talks about those who are afraid of offending someone when flying the flag. That is the least of my concerns. What offends me is disrespect and negligence when I see a faded, tattered flag flying over a business or some homes by those who are totally oblivious as to what patriotism really is.

We should never leave the flag out after dark unless a light is shining on it. Never should the flag be left out in inclement weather (of which w have a lot in Idaho!).

I am one of those who flies the flag on holidays and other special days. I am always respectful of it by never leaving it out after dark, in the rain, snow, etc.

If you really want to be a patriot, go to any V.A. office and ask for a list of rules to protect and preserve our national emblem.
