Lyle E. Spicer, 78

Lyle E. Spicer, 78, resident of St. Maries, died June 8, 2010, in St. Maries. He was born Nov. 29, 1931, to Lester and Bessie (Hanks) Spicer in Canistota, S.D.

He grew up in Harrison Flats. As a young man, he enjoyed playing the guitar with Dean Bates in a local band. He graduated from St. Maries High School with the class of 1950. He then enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps. and served in Korea. He was discharged in 1953 and returned to St. Maries.

He married Dorla J. Bailey on July 15, 1954, in Coeur d’Alene. They made their home in Kellogg where he worked for the Bunker Hill Smelter.

In 1956, he returned to Harrison Flats to operate his parent’s dairy farm. He moved to Spokane in 1958 where he worked as an accountant for Old Union Stockyards. In 1968, he moved to St. Maries and opened Spicer Accounting Co. He retired in 1998. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. One of his favorite pastimes was watching Gonzaga basketball games. He was a member of the St. Maries American Legion.

He is survived by his wife at the family home; son and daughter-in-law Craig and Susan Spicer of Edmonds, Wash.; and daughter and son-in-law Denise and Kevin Gilbert of Oregon City, Ore. He is also survived by sister Donna (Sam) Jacot of Spokane Valley, four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one grandchild.

At his request, no services will be held.

The family suggests memorials to Hospice of Benewah Co. 702 College Ave., St. Maries, ID 83861. Hodge Funeral Home, St. Maries, is entrusted with arrangements.
