TRAGEDY: Students learn from 'accident'

| June 4, 2010 10:00 PM

On May 25, we at Post Falls High School felt the experience of losing two of our fellow students in a tragic, alcohol-related accident. Fortunately this was not a real accident, but a mock accident to help convince seniors not to drink and drive. This event was staged at the high school and was meant to resemble a real accident, and the horrible consequences equated with one. We were able to realize how awful the destruction of such an incident is on a car and the lives of those involved. We also heard from the parents of those students included in this portrayal and the emotional tortures that they were put through.

This was an eye-opening experience that none of the seniors at Post Falls High will ever forget. We had a real life example of the consequences of driving under the influence of alcohol; the carnage to life and machinery it potentially caused certainly sealed our decisions not to drink.

This event was more than just a show put on for students; it took the coordination of many agencies and servicemen and women in order to make it possible. I would like to take this opportunity, on behalf of all seniors at Post Falls, to thank each of these agencies. The Post Falls Police and Fire Departments and the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Department for their parts in the exercise itself, and also the Kootenai County Substance Abuse Council for bringing this program to the seniors at PFHS. This collective effort will undoubtedly send us down a path of good choices both during and after graduation.
