Doris Swanson, 82

| July 31, 2010 10:00 PM

Doris Swanson, 82, passed away July 25, 2010, at home in Hayden Lake.

Doris was born to Emma and Christian Rasmussen in Sidney, Mont., in 1928. She grew up on the family farm doing her chores, walking to school in blizzards, putting up with 3 brothers and, not surprisingly, eager to move on as a young woman.

While earning her bachelor's degree in nursing at Montana College she met Dale, an engineering student, whom she would marry in 1951. She taught nursing at Emmanuel Hospital in Portland, Ore., before she and Dale moved to Spokane.

Doris knew how to throw the best cocktail and dinner parties. She loved her bridge games and occasionally came home with a 40 cent win.

She enjoyed world travel, tennis and skiing with her husband, Dale. And while Dale enjoyed playing golf, Doris did not, but she swung with the 9-holers anyway at the Hayden Lake Country Club. She was a caring and attentive mother to her four children. Family summers were spent at Hayden Lake, Iwhere Doris later moved full time.

Doris is survived by her children, Nancy (and Dan) Jochem, Marilyn (and John) Rundquist, and Robert Swanson; by her grandchildren Eric and Sunny Rundquist, and Miles and Emily Jochem; and by her brothers Curtis (andFlorence) and Arden (and Jan) Rasmussen. She was preceded in death by her son, Mark Swanson, and her husband, Dale Swanson.

A memorial service for Doris will be 11 a.m. Monday, Aug. 2 at the Hayden Lake Country Club, 2362 E. Bozanta Drive, Hayden Lake. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d'Alene Chapel, has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements. Memorial donations may be sent to Hospice of North Idaho, 9493 Government Way, Hayden, ID 83835.
