Julyamsh a gift from Tribe

| July 28, 2010 9:00 PM

The 13th annual Julyamsh Pow Wow was spectacular as usual, but this year one of the men's traditional dancers was drawing some attention from his roles in iconic films such as "Dances with Wolves" and "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee."

Nathan Chasing Horse is a Lakota Sioux from the Rosebud Nation of South Dakota ... a Medicine Man and motivational speaker living a traditional life of the Lakota. This annual pow wow and tribal encampment hosted by the Coeur d'Alene Tribe is always a learning experience and a real gift to our community.

The boys of summer are on a roll! The newly-crowned state champ Post Falls Junior Little League team is heading to California to play teams from Alaska, Wyoming, California, Hawaii and Nevada on Aug. 3.

Congratulations and good luck to players Jordan Cisco, Marc Conradi, Braden Davenport, Nate Gomer, Nick Hall, Matt Hilman, Corey Koski, Michael McKeown, Aaron Smith, JD Sullivan, Griffey Swift-Olsby, Kurtis Wiltse and to team manager Chad Davenport and coach Kurt Gomer.

If you'd like to help the team raise funds for the trip, there's a car wash today at Coldwell Banker Schneidmiller Realty's parking lot (Seltice & Bay Street) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday at Super 1 Foods in Post Falls.

Kudos to Chelsea Rosenberger of the North Idaho Fair staff on being elected to serve as chair of the Young Professional's Initiative for the International Association of Fairs and Expositions. The future of the fair industry is in good hands!

The CHS Class of 1970 had a grand time reuniting this past weekend. Lots of friends and former classmates traveled from afar for the festivities. One of our classmates, Debra Johnson Brown, was Miss Coeur d'Alene the year after graduation and looks as fabulous as ever. See her photograph and the official class photo at More Main Street.

Jim Shepperd turns 84 tomorrow, another of my favorite "Greatest Generation" veterans of World War II. He was born to Warren T. and Mildred Shepperd in 1926. Jim graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1944, where he served as ASB president. Jim continues to serve this community, especially the veterans. He always has a smile on his face and can be counted on for a hug. Have a great day my friend!

Also celebrating birthdays ... today Jan Nelson, Cathy Werner, Debra Wunderlich, Hank Waymans and Zach White blow out the candles. Friday is Sharmon Schmitt and Nicole Choquette's big day. Bill Hamilton, Patricia Richardson and Adam Durflinger will get their party on come Saturday. Aug. 1 birthdays belong to Rich Houser, Dennis Harlan and Patricia Kaufman.

While I was guest hosting on KVNI's morning show on Monday, Ted McCaffree phoned in off the air. He mentioned that he was quite sure he'd seen pro golfer/reigning Masters champ Phil Mickelson with his two daughters on Sherman Avenue this past Sunday morning. Ted's a golfer himself and said he recognized Mickelson's distinctive walk. Anyone else see the Mickelsons around town?

A beautiful and busy weekend coming up in Coeur d'Alene ... Art on the Green, Street Fair on Sherman Avenue and Taste of the Coeur d'Alenes. Coeur d'Alene High School Class of 1990 is reuniting this weekend, Friday evening at The Mill at Riverstone, Saturday night at the Eagles downtown and for a family picnic Sunday at Blue Grass Park. Post Falls High School's Class of 1970 will gather for their 40th reunion on Friday night at Curley's in Hauser and then at the Highlands on Saturday night. Enjoy!
