Hayden library staff receive honors

Twylla Rehder was selected as a Fellow in the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) Western Regional Fellowship, Transforming Life After 50. Facilitated by a partnership between the Idaho Commission for Libraries, California State Library, Oregon State Library and Washington State Library, the Fellowship will introduce 93 selected public library professionals from 11 states to a new framework for serving and engaging midlife adults, ages 50-plus. The fellows will re-examine traditional views on aging and explore innovative ways in which public libraries can become centers of productive aging, lifelong learning and civic engagement.

"We congratulate Twylla Rehder for being accepted and the Kootenai-Shoshone Area Library District is committed to applying new practices and tools developed as a result of this Fellowship," said John Hartung, Kootenai-Shoshone Area Libraries director. "We look forward to enhancing the resources that we can provide to our midlife patrons." Rehder holds a master's in library and information science from the University of Washington and has worked for the KSA Libraries for more than 20 years, 15 in bookmobile and outreach services.

"In addition, we are also pleased to announce that youth services librarian Karen Yother has been elected to the executive board for the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP)." The CSLP is a 49-state grassroots collaborative of states working together to provide a high quality summer reading program for children, teens and adults. Yother has represented Idaho libraries to the CSLP for seven years, most recently serving as vendor chair since 2009. She has been with the KSA Libraries for more than 12 years and recently graduated magna cum laude with a master's in library and information science with an emphasis on the needs of youth from Drexel University in Philadelphia.

The Hayden library will be featured in a new book, "Winning Grants, A How-To-Do-It Manual for Librarians with Multimedia Tutorials and Grant Development Tools" by Pamela MacKellar and Stephanie Rawlins Gerding. The 2007 From Your Library (FYL) grant was selected as "one that illustrates the best in successful library grants," MacKellar said. The $83,385 FYL grant allowed the library to reach children and families in underserved areas.

Yother and Rehder have also been selected to speak at the Association of Bookmobile and Outreach Services and the Association for Rural and Small Libraries joint conference in Denver later this year about their success with the FYL grant and outreach services to children and families.

"We are proud of our staff and the high quality of programs and services they offer to patrons throughout Kootenai and Western Shoshone counties," Hartung said. "Karen and Twylla are true assets to the library and our community. They continue to provide excellent programs and contribute to making the library an exciting place to visit for all ages."
