SANDERS BEACH: An ode to better days

| July 16, 2010 10:00 PM

We were taking a walk on Sanders Beach this evening and entered on the public beach at the Jewett House.  We are anticipating that the gentlemen on the private property on Lakeshore Drive across from the Jewett House did not fall over the retaining wall. We observed him watching the public from the edge of his retaining wall for nearly an hour. He was apparently caring for his roses. We all watched in amazement as he nearly fell off his retaining wall watching the swimmers and public folks enjoy Sanders Beach. He appeared to be concerned that someone might touch his property which has a metal guard railing to keep those darn citizens out. We would suggest that he attach a rope or cable to his waist and then to an anchor of some sort.

It is interesting to note that the beach area owned by the private property owners is certainly dirty and full of debris. We thought the owners were concerned how the public left the beach in such a terrible mess? The public area was very clean and maintained.

So very sad to visit the beloved Sanders Beach area and see the barriers that have been erected.   Not interested in opening that can of worms. Oh, wouldn't it be nice to have the original owners like Dr. Fox on Lakeshore Drive again?  Look what we have now.  We who grew up near Sanders Beach in the 1950's and 1960's can certainly recall the good times on that beach and the support we had from local NATIVE owners on Lakeshore Drive who truly cared about the citizens of CDA.

Again, I hope that gentlemen doesn't fall off the retaining wall and bruise his ego.  We wonder if he realizes how foolish he looked as we all observed him playing sneaky pete.  I'm not sure he will have the opportunity to read this letter but I surely feel better.
