Dr. Ged Barclay, 90

| July 2, 2010 7:35 AM

Charles Gedney Barclay, son of Dr. Alexander and Agnes Barclay, died June 29, 2010. He was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Coeur d’Alene and graduated from the University of Washington and the University of Oregon Medical School. Dr. Barclay also served as a naval officer in both World War II and the Korean War.

In 1942 he married Helen Emmons. Dr. Barclay returned to Coeur d’Alene with Helen after graduating from medical school to practice medicine and to raise their three children. Dr. Ged (as he was known) practiced medicine in Coeur d’Alene for more than 40 years with his brother (« Dr. Bud  »). As only the 12th doctor in town when he began practicing, he found things much different than they are now. But he was always known as a caring, compassionate and ethical physician. His love of, and commitment to, medicine was evidenced by his service on the Hope Ship, where he shared his medical training with Peruvian doctors and treated Peruvians who had no medical services available.

Dr. Ged was an avid golfer and boater who built three boats after retiring from his medical practice. He is survived by his wife, Helen; sons Scott and Steve; daughter Barbara; three grandchildren, Abigail, Alice and Gedney; and great-grand-daughter Nina Rose.

Family, friends and former patients will miss Dr. Ged’s gentle humanity, quiet competence and steadfast dedication. Yates Funeral Home, Coeur d’Alene, has been entrusted with the care of final arrangements. You may visit Dr. Ged’s memorial and sign his online guest book at www.yatesfuneralhomes.com.
