Vikings grab first title

| February 27, 2010 11:00 PM

POCATELLO - After qualfying 17 wrestlers to the 5A state tournament, Coeur d'Alene coach Jeff Moffat knew his team had the potential to do something special at Holt Arena.

Coeur d'Alene ran away from the field on Saturday, winning its first state wrestling team title in school history, beating second-place Highland of Pocatello by 36 points.

"I'm so excited for the kids," Moffat said. "They've all worked really hard to get here. Each one of them followed the plan. We had a lot of kids step up this weekend down here. It was an amazing team effort."

James Ost (125) of Post Falls won a state title over Kris McFarlane of Centennial by a 6-3 decision. The Trojans finished sixth.

In the 4A tournament, Brandon Richardson of Lakeland capped his high school career with a state title at 152 pounds, defeating Tre Jarboe from Columbia High of Nampa 2-1 in the championship match.

Lakeland teammate Nate Wright, wrestling less than a month after a serious knee injury, edged Juan Navarro of Blackfoot 9-8 to win the 103-pound title.

Timberlake junior Dylan White captured his first state title, pinning Kyle Abels of Homedale in 3 minutes, 41 seconds in the 3A 285-pound final.

Bonners Ferry boasted a pair of champions. Blaine Invernon pinned Jacob Herman of Kimberly in 1:41 in the 3A 103-pound final. And Trevor Hampton scored a 9-1 major decision over Chase Richins of Shelley at 140.

Bonners Ferry just missed bringing home a trophy, finishing fifth, 1 1/2 points behind Sugar Salem.

Sandpoint junior Garret Belgarde, the No. 1 seed who won a 103-pound state title as a sophomore, was pinned by No. 2 seed David Tovar of Nampa at 4:47 of the third period of the 4A 112-pound championship match.

Kenny Staub (130), Braden Mowry (135), Colin Comack (152), Johnny Peregrina (160) and Kevin Moore (171) placed second for the Vikings in the 5A tournament.

"It's really something special," Mowry said of the team win. "We all worked really hard for our championship. It means a lot as a senior. Nobody won a state title for us, but we had a lot of guys going through the back door and getting points. Everyone had a great tournament."

Sam Howard (125) finished third, A.J. Konda (103) and Caleb Davis (189) both were fourth, Jake Norris (160) fifth and Garrett DeMers (152), Matt Howard (189) and Alex Kastens (215) sixth for Coeur d'Alene.

"It feels great," Norris said. "I've only been here two years - but these guys are like my brothers. I'd do anything for them. This is the best feeling ever."

Moffat credited the Buzzsaw wrestling program for getting the squad to Saturday's title.

"This team was in the works six years ago with the Buzzsaw program," Moffat said. "We knew we'd have a good team with a chance to do something at state. We pretty much dominated the field. It was an amazing weekend and says a lot about our kids. They are all hard workers. They deserve this for all their hard work this season."

Nathan McLeod (140) finished third, Tyler Booth (135) fourth, Derrick Booth (130) fifth and Tyler Mahal (125) sixth for Post Falls.

Lake City senior Marcus Banducci finished fourth at 119 pounds for the Timberwolves, which placed 17th.

Sorry, coach - first things first. After Richardson won his first state title since his freshman year, he shook hands with his opponent, had his arm raised in victory - then took off to find his father, Pete.

"I was speechless," Richardson said. "All I could think of was running to my dad and giving him a big bear hug."

Richardson finished his high school career with two state titles, as well as a runner-up finish at state last year when he lost in the finals on what the Hawks felt was a bad call.

"He controlled the match the whole time; he was never in danger," Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. "He wasn't going to let it come down to a call this year."

"I did not want to leave it to chance," said Richardson, who has signed to wrestle at Wyoming next season. "This was the way I wanted to end it. Last year was pretty heartbreaking to say the least. Coach Rob emphasized staying on the offensive, never coasting or letting up. Last year I would get comfortable and let up."

Wright, also a senior, wasn't going to let a torn ACL and a sprained PCL (posterior cruciate ligament in his left knee stop him from winning a state title.

"I went to physical therapy, and put on a big brace," Wright said. "There was a little bit of pain from the PCL, but not enough to stop me."

Wright said he dedicated his state title to his late father, Jesse, who was killed in a car crash four years ago.

"It feels awesome, after so many hours put into high school wrestling, I finally achieved my goal," Wright said.

"We weren't even sure he was going to finish out the season," Edelblute said. "To go on and win state is an awesome thing."

Belgarde started the day by pinning Columbia's Kameron Reddish in the second period, his third straight pin en route to the finals.

Sandpoint senior Leonard Fister (160) was pinned in the second period by Kuna's Joey Dondero in the consolation bracket, before falling 9-8 to Jerome's Cody McCoy to finish sixth, giving the Bulldogs two placers.

Columbia rolled to the team title. Lakeland was 11th, Sandpoint 15th.

White nearly won a state title last year, but a knee injury led to his only loss of the season, in the finals.

"I thought Dylan wrestled extremely well," Timberlake coach Ryan Montang said. "He had a game plan from watching (Abels) wrestle throughout the tournament and wanted to take away his offense. It worked out perfectly."

"It's pretty exciting," White said of the win. "It feels awesome. I'm pretty excited about it. I was kind of nervous before the match, so I was just happy I won."

John Morris (160) and Kody Hongslo (112) were fifth and sixth, respectively for Timberlake.

"Kody wrestled great as a freshman," Montang said. "He was right there, but things didn't go our way. As a freshman - he was pretty impressive."

Zach Heigel was sixth at 171 pounds for Bonners Ferry.

Ricky Avalos finished third for St. Maries at 171, helping the Lumberjacks finish 18th under first-year coach Rod Cochrane.

"Our kids wrestled their butts off," Cochrane said. "Most of them lost their first match and had to wrestle their way back, but they rose to the occasion and did what they had to do. Each of them knew, if they wanted to bring something back home, they had to get rolling."

John Primer (135) and Troy Sines (160) finished fourth and Derek Charles (152) was sixth for the Lumberjacks.

Kellogg's Cole Jerome came up short in his bid for a 3A state title in 112 pounds, losing by decision to Kasey West of American Falls 7-1.

Zack Pickering (145) and Ricky Clark (285) were fourth and Chris Vergobbi (119) and Cory Squires (125) placed fifth for the Wildcats, who finished ninth.

Priest River had four placers, topped by James Hegge's fourth-place at 130 pounds. Chris Pooley was fifth at 140 pounds for the Spartans, which finished 10th.

American Falls won the team title. Kellogg was ninth, Priest River 11th.

Wallace junior Jake Waters finished second, losing a 6-5 decision to Taylor Walker of Firth at 140 pounds.

Wallace, which won their first district title in 43 years, placed 15th in the 2A standings, with Kidman Cook (119), Chad Flatt (130) and Nathan Cook (171) each finishing sixth for the Miners.

North Fremont won the team title. Wallace was 15th.
