POST FALLS - Two new programs have been launched to support the Boys and Girls Club of Kootenai County.

Edge Fitness of Post Falls has teamed with the nonprofit to challenge the community to live a healthier lifestyle. Also, the 300 Club offers a chance for 400 people to sponsor a child for $25 a month or $300 per year to be members.

With the Edge Fitness Lifestyle Challenge, people can join anytime during the year for a one-time registration fee of $20, which includes covers a guidebook, the T-shirt and monthly parties and weigh-ins for each participant. Membership is good for the rest of the year and there is no monthly fee.

"This program is about community, getting healthy and the Boys and Girls Club," said Holly Childers of Edge Fitness. "With the current state of the economy, many people just don't have the extra money required for the education, support and membership fees that are usually associated with getting fit and healthy.

"We have a plan to pull the community together and work as a team through the year, building new, healthy habits and losing some weight for the Boys and Girls Club. The challenge is designed to lead people to an overall healthier lifestyle."

The kickoff for the March challenge will be tonight at Edge Fitness/Mountain View Chiropractic, 1624 E. Seltice Way, from 5:30-7 p.m. All are welcome.

Each participant will weigh in at the monthly party and again at the end of the year. Every pound lost by the participants will raise money for the club through pledges.

"The goal of this challenge is to lose a combined 2,010 pounds during the year with money pledged toward each pound lost," Childers said. "It's easy to get involved in this program that will build a healthier community and help the Boys and Girls Club break ground on their new facility this year. Our goal was to make it possible for anyone to participate."

Registration forms are are Edge Fitness/Mountain View Chiropractic, Pyramid Skate and Screen, The Black Book, Pita Pit, Knudtsen Chevrolet and the Boys and Girls Club at the Post Falls Nazarene Church.

Forms can be requested at hollyonthego@gmail.com or 661-2220.

The 300 Club sponsorship program's goal is to reach 400 people who will sponsor a child for $25 per month or $300 per year. The program is intended to offset operating costs, estimated to be about $450 per year per child. Donors can have the amounts deducted monthly or make a one-time payment.

The nonprofit, currently based in the Post Falls Nazarene Church next to Mullan Trail Elementary, serves more than 500 kids between ages 6 and 18 per year during the summer and after school.

With the recession, it's unclear if construction will start this year on the club's $2.9 million facility on Mullan Avenue between the library and school district administration office. About half of the funding has been raised.
