James Vaughn Getz, 89

Funeral services for James V. “Jim” Getz, 89, will be held at 11 a.m Thursday, Feb. 25, 2010, at the Princeton Church of the Nazarene, Princeton, Idaho, with Pastor Colan and James W. Deatherage officiating.

Burial will follow at the IOOF Evergreen Cemetery, Rosalia, Wash., with Potlatch Post No. 10300 V.F.W. and the United States Army Honor Guard conducting military honors.

Jim passed away early Tuesday morning on Feb. 16, 2010, at his Potlatch, Idaho, home.

He was born on Dec. 15, 1920, in Clearfield, Iowa, to Harry W. and Clara (Strange) Getz. He came west with his family to the Spring Valley area east of Rosalia, Wash. He attended the Spring Valley Country School for one year. He later attended the Oakesdale Schools and in 1929 came to Palouse, Wash., where he graduated from the Palouse High School in 1939.

He joined the United States Army on Feb. 9, 1943. Jim married Eunice Poston on Nov. 24, 1943, in Lewiston, Idaho. The couple made their home in Palouse, Wash.

After their marriage Jim served in the European Theater during WWII as a heavy machine gunner. He was at Normandy, northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland, and Central Europe.

Mr. Getz received the Purple Heart for wounds received in action on March 1, 1945, in Germany. He was discharged on Dec. 5, 1945.

After the war, Mr. Getz returned to Palouse. In 1950 moved to Potlatch, where he was employed at Potlatch Forest Inc. as the planner foreman. He retired from the Potlatch mill in January 1983. He later worked one year at the Lewiston mill. Mrs. Getz died in 1988.

He married JoAnn Curtis on Sept. 2, 1992, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, and the couple made their home at Potlatch.

Jim attended the Presbyterian Church, Lifetime member of the American Legion, Potlatch Post No. 10300 V.F.W. and the D.A.V. in Spokane. Mr. Getz enjoyed hunting, fishing and gambling.

Survivors include his wife, Jo Ann Getz, Pullman, Wash.; one son, James R. Getz, Lewiston; five daughters, Jacqueline R. Beaudry and her husband Michael, Spokane, Wash., Janette M. Doherty and her husband Greg, Bayview, Idaho, Janean M. Deatherage and her husband Jim, Idaho Falls, Idaho, Paula J. Babb and her husband Larry, Potlatch, Jamie L. Stewart and her husband Rod, Rupert, Idaho; two stepsons, Christopher and Thomas Curtis, both of Spanaway, Wash.; five stepdaughters, Debbie Hart, Lewiston, Mary C. Kingery, Missoula, Mont., Joan Belo, Vancouver, Wash., Stephanie Aaron, Spokane, Jo Ann Curtis, Everett, Wash.; one sister, Betty J. Tribbett, Cave Bay, Idaho; 16 grandchildren, 15 step-grandchildren, 31 great-grandchildren, several step-great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandsons.

Memorials may be given to the Scenic 6 Park in Potlatch.
