Girls state champs ceremony tonight
COEUR d’ALENE — The Coeur d’Alene High girls basketball team will be presented with the banner that will be displayed in the CHS gym during halftime of tonight’s boys game between Coeur d’Alene and Lewiston, which begins at 7 p.m.
The Vikings beat Lewiston 51-45 on Saturday to earn their third straight state title. An assembly to recognize the team will be at 8 a.m. on Wednesday at CHS.
Bordelon receives WSU volleyball award
PULLMAN — Four Washington State Cougar seniors who completed their playing careers were celebrated and year-end awards were handed out at the Washington State Volleyball 2009 awards banquet Saturday at the Compton Union Building.
The banquet highlighted the 2009 Washington State volleyball team that returned to the NCAA Tournament after a seven-year absence, and feted the accomplishments of seniors Renee Bordelon of Coeur d’Alene, a former Lake City High standout, Jackie Albright of Lake Forest, Calif., Kelly Hyder of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Cassie Robbins of Yakima, Wash. Head Coach Andrew Palileo was also honored with a plaque from the conference for being voted the Pac-10 Volleyball Coach of the Year.
The Coaches’ Coug Award was given to Bordelon. The award is given to the person who is committed to being the ideal student athlete, demonstrated by academic excellence, leadership and commitment to the values of the volleyball program. This individual, throughout her career, has shown what being a Coug is all about. Bordelon, a tri-captain and setter, was named to the All-Pac-10 honorable mention team. She was named MVP of Utah Valley La Quinta Inn & Suites Invite and to the Nike Cougar Invite all-tournament team. Bordelon was named Pac-10 Player of the Week for Aug. 31-Sept. 7. Her 11.47 assists per set average was third-best in the Pac-10 and 14th nationally.
Wahl named WHL Player of the Week
The BOSTON PIZZA WHL Player of the Week is forward Mitch Wahl of the Spokane Chiefs.
Wahl picked up eight points, scoring two goals and six assists to go with a plus-4 rating, in four games over the past week, helping the Chiefs post a 4-0 record in that span
On Monday, the Chiefs hosted the Everett Silvertips at the Arena in Spokane. Wahl picked up three assists and was named the games 3rd Star as the Chiefs downed the ‘Tips 3-2. On Wednesday, the Chiefs were in Kamloops to face the Blazers. Wahl found the net twice and added an assist as the Chiefs defeated the Blazers 7-0; he was also named the games 2nd Star. On Friday, the Kootenay Ice hosted the Chiefs at the Cranbrook Recreation Complex; Wahl nabbed one assist in the Chiefs 6-4 win. The next evening, the Chiefs renewed hostilities with their U.S. Division rivals the Tri-City Americans at the Toyota Center in Kennewick. Wahl picked up the assist on the Chiefs game winning goal, beating the Americans 2-1.
Wahl’s eight points over the last four games has him sitting sixth among WHL scorers with 83 points (27 goals, 56 assists) in 62 games played.
Youth tournament announced
Idaho Premier Basketball will be hosting their annual March Madness competitive youth basketball tournament in Idaho Falls on Friday, March 12 and Saturday, March 13.
