Kellogg girls finally solve Timberlake, earn state berth
- GIRLS BASKETBALL
RATHDRUM - Chelsea Morgan had 17 points, seven rebounds and four steals to lead the Kellogg Wildcats past the Timberlake Tigers 56-50 in the second-place game of the 3A District 1-2 tournament Saturday night at Lakeland High's Hawk Court to earn a berth to state.
Kellogg (16-8) had lost three close ones to Timberlake (17-4) during the regular season.
"These girls wanted it bad," Kellogg coach Jeff Lambert said. "We were giving up a lot of points to Cassie (Thompson), so we changed it up and shut everyone else down. These girls wanted it bad enough to go get it."
Kellogg faces Marsh Valley (18-4) of Arimo on Thursday at 2 p.m. PST in its state opener at Skyview High in Nampa.
Guard Ryder Ashcraft put Kellogg up by three points on a pair of free throws with 30 seconds remaining and the Wildcats put the game away on a free throw from Kirsten Viche to make it 56-50.
"I'm still trying to let it all sink in," Lambert said. "We'd played them three times and couldn't seem to finish at the end of the game - but somehow we did tonight."
Thompson finished with 24 points for Timberlake, which was ranked second in the state in 3A, and was trying to bounce back from a 64-39 loss to Priest River in the district title game Friday night.
Priest River (16-6) opens vs. Fruitland (22-1) on Thursday at 7.

"We played pretty bad in the first quarter," Lakeside coach Ron Miller said. "We were kind of nervous and afraid early on. We ran into a better team than us today. They can do some things at this point that we can't. I wasn't disappointed with our effort, but once we started running our offense we were able to keep it reasonable."

Down the stretch, they executed really well and got the shots they wanted - we took some quick shots and that is not normal for us."
