COEUR d'ALENE - The body of what might have been a transient was found near the Canfield Mountain Trail System on Sunday.

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Department is investigating an unattended death at a campsite in the Coeur d'Alene National Forest.

According to a press release, two local residents were about four miles east from the Fernan Gun Range looking for antlers about 9:30 a.m. when they discovered the campsite and found a body in a collapsed tent.

"Indications at this time are that the person was possibly a transient," the release said.

Because of the body's condition, the sex and identity are unknown.

An autopsy indicated "there were no obvious signs of trauma or a cause of death."

KCSD detectives are contacting local medical facilities and homeless aid groups to try and identify the body.

An investigation continues.

Pipe bomb found on Riverview Road

POST FALLS -A Post Falls man picking up trash along a roadside Wednesday afternoon found what authorities called a pipe bomb.

The man told police he was walking along the roadway edge of Riverview Road at Crystal Bay Road when he came across what appeared to be an explosive device. Kootenai County Sheriff's Department deputies said it had a similar shape and design to a "pipe bomb," according to a press release.

A KCSD Explosive Recognition Team member secured the area until members of the Spokane County Explosive Ordinance Disposal Team arrived and rendered the device safe.
