Devils win in Kovalchuk's debut

| February 5, 2010 8:00 PM

Jay Pandolfo capped a three-goal outburst in the final 3:04 and the New Jersey Devils welcomed Ilya Kovalchuk by rallying for a 4-3 victory over the stunned Toronto Maple Leafs on Friday night at Newark, N.J.

Dean McAmmond, Travis Zajac and Pandolfo scored in the wild final 3 minutes that turned a disappointing debut for the former No. 1 overall pick into a wild celebration.

The explosive Kovalchuk, acquired from Atlanta on Thursday in a blockbuster five-player deal, finished with two assists, but really wasn't much of a factor in the stunning comeback.

Capitals 5, Thrashers 2: Alex Ovechkin scored his NHL-leading 39th goal and had an assist, and Washington extended its team-record winning streak at 13 with a victory over visiting Atlanta.

Flames 2, Panthers 1: At Sunrise, Fla., Ales Kotalik and Mark Giordano scored, and Mikka Kiprusoff made 12 saves in Calgary's win over Florida.

Hurricanes 4, Sabres 3: Jussi Jokinen snapped a third-period tie and added an assist, and backup Manny Legace made 28 saves in Carolina's win at Buffalo.

Coyotes 2, Blackhawks 1, SO: Robert Lang and defenseman Adrian Aucoin scored in the shootout to lift Phoenix at Chicago for its season-high sixth straight victory.
