Hawks drop close one to Moscow in 4A Region 1 semis

MOSCOW - The Lakeland Hawks fought the good fight, but the shots wouldn't fall in a 48-42 loss to the Moscow Bears in the semifinals of the 4A Region 1 tournament Thursday night at Bear Den.

Emily Stecker had 12 points and three steals for Lakeland (8-14). Neena Buchman had nine points and six rebounds and Cieana Close had seven rebounds.

"We played hard enough to win, and executed well enough to win," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "It was just a matter of getting some of those shots to fall."

Abi Quinnett scored 16 points, Chelsea Waters 14 for Moscow (6-15), which jumped out to an 11-2 lead. Lakeland closed to within three points in the fourth quarter, but hit just 5 of 15 from the foul line. Moscow made 12 of 25.

"We had our chances," Seymour said.

Lakeland plays host to Sandpoint (1-20) in a loser-out game Saturday at 6 p.m. The winner will play at Moscow, needing to beat the Bears on Tuesday and Thursday to advance to state. Moscow needs just one more win to advance to state.

SANDPOINT - Skyler Tucker scored a season-high 18 points, including three 3-pointers, to lead the Bulldogs over the Hawks in 4A Inland Empire League action at Les Rogers Court.

Stefan Buratto had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Bulldogs (6-10, 2-2 4A IEL), who earned the No. 2 seed to regionals behind Moscow.

Joel Underdahl scored 14 points to lead Lakeland (11-8, 1-3), which jumped out to an early 12-1 lead and led by five points in the fourth quarter.

Kyle English swished a heave from well beyond the half-court line at the buzzer after Sandpoint built a late four-point lead at the foul line.

Lakeland plays host to Bonners Ferry on Monday.

HARRISON FLATS - Hayden Kraack hit a jumper with one-tenth of a second remaining to give the Warriors a nonleague win over the Panthers.

"We'd been talking about playing with composure for the last two weeks," Kootenai coach Andrew Whipple said. "We were down most of the game and I told our guys that if we remained composed, we'd have a chance."

Jake Zarpentine had 14 points, 12 rebounds and three steals, and Taylor Dodson had 14 points and three steals for Kootenai (9-9), which hosts Clark Fork on Saturday.

Bob Schrack had 21 points for Coeur d'Alene Charter (11-8), which travels to Grangeville on Saturday.

KELLOGG - Blake Jerome scored 13 points to lead the Wildcats past the Miners in a nonleague game at Andrews Gymnasium.

Going into the fourth quarter tied at 33, Kellogg switched to man-to-man defense where senior Tyler Groth keyed the Wildcat defense to outscore the Miners 12-2 in the final quarter.

"Tyler's defense was the difference for us tonight," Kellogg coach Kieth Finkbeiner said. "He disrupted them from entering the ball and they couldn't get settled into their offense. His defense on the ball was amazing."

Clancy Drews had 11 points for Wallace (7-9), which travels to Mullan tonight. J.J. Bebout added seven rebounds for Kellogg (11-6), which travels to St. Maries on Saturday for the Brawl for the Ball.

COEUR d'ALENE - Lewiston, ranked fourth in 5A, had nine pins to defeat the Timberwolves.

"We wrestled hard," Lake City coach Corey Owen said. "It's tough in our region this year. We really have our hands full each time we wrestle within the region. Sometimes, we run into kids with more experience. Marcus (Banducci) and Chris (Schenk) wrestled well on senior night."

Schenk (215) pinned D.J. Mauer in 1:55 and Banducci (119) won by major decision over Justin Rodgers 17-3.
