Lakeland boys rolled by Moscow

GIRLS BASKETBALL • RATHDRUM - Emily Stecker and Neena Buchman scored 12 points apiece and second-seeded Lakeland opened the 4A Region 1 tournament with a 62-40 win over third-seeded Sandpoint on Tuesday night at Hawk Court. "It was a great team effort, we're picking the right time to play as a team," Lakeland coach Steve Seymour said. "We got out to a pretty good start and played consistently for four quarters." The Hawks (8-13) will visit top-seeded Moscow on Thursday for a berth into the tournament title game. The loser will host Sandpoint (1-20) in a loser-out game Saturday. Mac Stannard's 13 points and six assists led a balanced Moscow attack as four players scored in double figures. The Bears improved to 12-4 overall, 3-1 in the league after shooting 26 for 49 (53 percent) from the field and outrebounding Lakeland 30-20. "They just outplayed us tonight," Hawks coach Trent Derrick said. "We've got to bounce back. We play at Sandpoint on Thursday and I expect our guys to come out hungry." Seniors Joel Underdahl (16 points) and Hunter Arno (12 points) led Lakeland, which falls to 11-7, 1-2.
