WRESTLING

Freeman, Wash. - Derek Charles won the 160-pound division with a 3-0 record and St. Maries placed third in the 12-team Freeman wrestling tournament Thursday.

"It's good to go to a tournament out of state and see some different styles," St. Maries coach Rodney Cochrane said. "Our leaders are stepping up and giving the younger guys some direction."

Cody Yearout (145) and Ray Flowers (135) placed third for the Lumberjacks with records of 3-1.

Colton Derry (112), Aaron Kolar (119), Joe Bloomsburg (140), Brandon Avalos (145), Jesse Johnson (189) and Devin Vint (215) each placed fourth.

"The guys can hold their heads high as a young team to go into a 12-team tournament and take third," Cochrane said. "They definitely earned it."

St. Maries next wrestles at the Priest River tournament Jan. 8.
