Please recycle cereal and cracker boxes, junk mail

| December 20, 2010 8:00 PM

Partners Blue Bird Recycling and Kootenai County Solid Waste have noted that they have been surprised that more items were not being recycled in the city of Coeur d'Alene's single-stream recycling program, now available through Waste Management. They weren't seeing cereal boxes, cracker boxes, and junk mail - all items which are recyclable in the program. Please be sure to add these items to your blue cart.

As a reminder, since the holiday season is upon us, gift wrap, ribbons, and bows are not recyclable.

The recycling program itself is 17 years old, but the new carts, which have lids, make the process a great deal easier because they roll out - they don't have to be carried.

In addition, with the new program Blue Bird Recycling has gone from accepting seven to 17 items for recycling. Glass and plastic bags are two of the only regular household items the program does not accept. Although infrequent, such items slow the process. Plastic bags can, however, be dropped off at the Kootenai County Transfer Station on Ramsey Road.
